Rock Milling in Austin & the Texas Hill Country We eat limestone for breakfast, and turn it into your driveway.

Clear Ground mills surface limestone in place into aggregate across Austin and the Texas Hill Country, for building pads, driveways and access roads. Milling runs $2,500–$6,000 per acre, usually one to three days. The rock stays on site as base material, so there is no haul-off. Deeper rock is broken with an excavator and hammer instead.

Why Hill Country
limestone
changes the plan.
West
Of the Balcones Fault
Edwards and Glen Rose limestone sit at or near the surface across much of the Hill Country. East of the fault, Austin Chalk and Blackland Prairie clays dominate and rock is deeper. They dig differently. Pool builders who do not probe for rock find it when the excavator hits it.

Service Overview

What is rock milling?
The rock in your way
becomes base material.

Rock milling grinds surface limestone in place with a rock-milling head rented for the job. It turns a shelf of intact rock into crushed aggregate at typical depths of 4 to 6 inches, without disturbing the soil around it.

The output is crushed limestone, the same kind of material supply yards sell as road base and driveway aggregate. The gradation depends on the rock and the pass, so ask for the target in your quote. It is produced on your site, from your rock.

Milling runs on its own, bundled with lot clearing, or as part of access road and pad construction. This page owns the milling price. The road page prices by the linear foot.

Road Base
Access Roads · Equipment Paths
Crushed limestone compacts into a base for equipment roads, staging areas and ranch roads.
Avoids imported road base
Pad Fill
Building Pads · Pool Surrounds
Processed limestone can serve as sub-base fill under pads and decks where your engineer approves it. It drains well and compacts predictably.
Replaces imported fill where approved
Driveway Material
Estate Driveways · Ranch Roads
Crushed limestone is a standard driveway surface across the Hill Country. Milling it from surface rock skips the trucking.
Native rock, no import
Retaining Wall Backfill
Drainage · Retaining Structures
Crushed limestone backfill behind retaining walls and in drainage swales drains freely and is on site.
Avoids importing backfill

How it works

HOW DOES ROCK MILLING WORK?

1/4

BEFORE MOBILIZING

STEP 1

WE FIND THE ROCK BEFORE WE QUOTE.

We walk the site, look for outcrops and shelving, and probe rock depth. An optional drone scan adds a surface map of where rock is exposed. A drone sees only the surface, so probing tells us how deep it goes. You see the rock extent and what it means for cost before you commit.

MILLING

STEP 2

OBSTRUCTION IN. AGGREGATE OUT.

The rented rock-milling head works the rock in straight, overlapping passes. The crushed limestone lands behind the drum as a uniform layer. Nothing is loaded into trucks. The FAE mulching head clears the vegetation, then the rented mill follows, so clearing and milling share one mobilization.

CHECKING DEPTH

STEP 3

DEPTH CHECKED AS WE GO.

The operator checks milled depth with a probe and a tape as the job goes, so you get the depth you paid for and not a few inches of dust on top of an intact shelf. If the rock changes hardness or depth partway across the site, we tell you before it changes the scope. Where rock is too hard or too deep to mill, we switch to the excavator and hydraulic hammer.

HANDOFF

STEP 4

A SURFACE YOUR ENGINEER CAN USE.

We walk the finished surface with you and hand over before-and-after photos. Your engineer decides whether the milled layer is acceptable as sub-base for a slab or pad. An optional drone scan measures surface grades and quantities, typically 2–3 business days after the flight. Our drone scans measure surfaces, quantities and grades. They are not a boundary survey or a sealed survey by a licensed surveyor, and a drone cannot see below the ground surface.

Services & Pricing

How much does rock milling cost?
$2,500–$6,000 per acre.

Milling

Lot & site
rock milling

Surface limestone on a pool build or infill lot does not have to leave the site. The mill processes it in place and it stays on the ground as sub-base for the work that follows. Typically bundled with lot clearing as one mobilization.

Typically 1–3 days · 0.25–2 acres
Rock-milling head rented for the job
$2,500–$6,000 per acre
Standalone milling. Often bundled with clearing.
What moves the price: rock hardness and depth. "Blue rock" is contractor slang for denser, harder limestone. It mills slower and wears teeth faster. Rock deeper than the mill reaches moves to the excavator and hammer. Boulders embedded in soil take longer per acre than a continuous shelf because the machine keeps repositioning. Hardness is confirmed on the first pass.

Roads

Access roads
& pads

Milled limestone makes a firm surface for ranch roads, driveways, staging pads and equipment hardstands. Roads are priced by the linear foot and pads by the acre on the rock-milled access roads page.

Clearing
+ rock milling

The most common setup on Hill Country lots: the CAT 299D3 XE clears vegetation with the mulching head, then a rented mill works the exposed limestone. One crew, one visit, two problems solved. Rough grading can be a third phase in the same mobilization.

One mobilization · Rented mill on the same job
Priced by component
Clearing plus $2,500–$6,000/acre
Clearing at $2,000–$5,200 per acre (mulching) or $3,000–$8,500 per acre (grub, haul and prep), plus milling.
What moves the price: vegetation density and rock extent both count. Light cedar over a moderate shelf runs efficiently. Dense cedar over hard rock runs longer per acre. The written quote lists each component.

Prices reviewed: September 2026. Ranges for Austin and Central Texas; your site walk sets the final number. Mobilization is typically $725 per job, more with distance. See all pricing or the land clearing calculator.

The Decision

Should you haul rock off
or mill it in place?

Haul the rock off
Break the rock with a hammer, then load it
Pay for trucks and trips to a disposal or crushing site
Import base or fill to replace what left
Several truck trips over your site and access road
VS
Mill it in place
Attachment grinds shallow rock in a pass or two
Aggregate stays on site, with no trucks
Milled limestone serves as base, pad fill or driveway material where your engineer approves
One machine and one operator, with minimal disruption
Equipment

High-flow compact track loader
Runs the FAE mulching head for clearing. The rented mill follows on the same job, so there is no second mobilization.
Deep or hard rock
CAT 305.5E2 and Kobelco SK75
Excavators with hydraulic hammers
When rock is too hard or deep to mill, an excavator with a hydraulic hammer breaks it out. That is priced per cubic yard on the limestone rock excavation page, at $35–$90 per cubic yard.
Who This Service Is For

Who hires us
to mill rock?

Pool Builders
Hit rock at 18 inches. Now what?

Your crew shows up to dig and there is a limestone shelf near the surface. We mill the surface rock before your crew mobilizes, so the dig starts in processed aggregate and not an intact shelf. We probe rock before you quote the homeowner, so the change-order conversation happens before the dig.

Typical pathway: Site walk → Lot clearing → Rock milling → Pool shell excavation
How we work with pool builders →
Infill Developers
Surface rock hits your pad prep budget. Mill it.

An infill lot with surface limestone has no room for a haul-off line the pro forma did not have. Milling converts the rock to sub-base on site where your engineer approves it. One mobilization handles clearing, milling and rough grade.

Typical pathway: Lot clearing and rock milling together
Rough grade in the same visit
How we work with developers →
Estate & Ranch Owners
Your rock is your driveway.

Estates with rock outcroppings on the driveway or access road do not have to import limestone from a quarry. They are sitting on it. Milling processes existing surface rock into driveway and road base. Roads are priced on the access roads page.

Typical pathway: Rock-milled access roads and pads
Often with cedar clearing in the same mobilization

Frequently Asked

Rock Milling Questions

A hammer on an excavator breaks rock into chunks that have to be scooped, loaded and hauled. It is the right tool for deep rock that must come out, such as foundation and pool digs. A mill grinds surface limestone in place and the output stays as aggregate. Hammer removes rock. Mill converts it. Some jobs need both.
$2,500–$6,000 per acre. Rock depth and hardness set the number. Rock too deep to mill runs $35–$90 per cubic yard with a hammer. See pricing.
Typically 4 to 6 inches. For thin caps, shelf exposures and road or pad areas near grade, that is enough in one or two passes. Rock that must come out deeper for construction clearance moves to excavation with a hammer, which is a different service and price.
For roads, driveways and staging pads, generally yes. It compacts and drains well. For a slab or engineered pad, your engineer decides whether the milled layer meets the spec and what gradation is needed. Tell us the requirement before we quote, since gradation depends on the rock and the pass.
"Blue rock" is contractor slang for denser, harder limestone. It slows the mill and wears teeth faster, which raises the cost per acre. We flag it in the proposal when the probe suggests it. If we hit harder rock mid-job, we tell you before we continue. In the worst case we switch to the excavator and hammer, which is priced as excavation.
Yes, and it is the most common setup on Hill Country lots. The loader clears with the mulching head, then a rented mill follows. One visit, one mobilization. Bundling costs less than two separate visits.
There is no formal minimum. Mobilization is a fixed cost, typically $725 per job and more with distance, so a milling zone under a quarter acre costs more per square foot. Small rock zones are cheapest when added to other work on the same mobilization, such as lot clearing or grading.
