Fuel Breaks & Brush
Reduction in
the Texas Hill Country

A fuel break is a cleared strip that cuts the continuous brush a fire needs to cross your land. We build them for ranches, acreage and HOAs in Austin and Central Texas, and price them as mulching at $2,000–$5,200 per acre. Most jobs start 1–3 weeks after approval. Before and after photos are included.

A defensible space perimeter protects the structure. A fuel break slows fire before it gets there. Ranch owners can also look at the Texas A&M Forest Service fuel reduction grant.

The Basics

What is
a fuel break
and why build one?

Fire needs fuel. A fuel break takes out the continuous fuel path that lets a fire travel across your land toward a structure.

A break does not stop every spark. It slows sustained spread and gives crews a place to work. Placement matters as much as width. A break in the wrong place interrupts nothing.

Why Placement Matters

Fire runs faster uphill. We look at slope, wind and the paths fuel takes toward your buildings on the site walk. Then we place breaks across the likely approaches. Texas A&M Forest Service guidance is our starting point. Last reviewed: September 2026.

01
Width
Steeper ground and heavier fuel call for wider breaks. A narrow strip lets embers cross. For the Texas A&M Forest Service grant, each treatment must be at least 66 ft wide.
02
Position
Slope, wind direction and vegetation set where a break does the most good. We walk it with you and confirm it on the ground.
03
Surface Treatment
A break with deadfall or debris left in it still has fuel. Our CAT 299D3 XE mulches the corridor to ground level, and our CAT 305.5E2 mini excavator grubs roots where the plan calls for it.
04
Connection
One break rarely protects a whole property. We tie breaks into existing roads, cleared ground and natural barriers.
Placement

Where do
we place breaks?

Placement is a terrain decision. Three spots come up most often.

↑
Upslope Approaches

Fire speeds up as it climbs. A break across the base of an upslope approach meets it before it builds.

Wind Corridors

In open pasture and on ridge tops, wind drives spread. Breaks across the prevailing wind line interrupt it.

Approaches to Structures

Fire can channel toward a house through draws and narrow fuel paths. We find those paths on the site walk and cut across them.

What We Clear

Which brush
do we take out?

Primary Fuel
Ashe Juniper (Cedar)

The main fuel in most Hill Country breaks. Our FAE mulching head processes standing cedar and deadfall in one pass. Nothing is burned or hauled.

METHOD: CAT 299D3 XE + FAE MULCHER · MULCHED IN PLACE
Secondary Fuel
Native Brush & Understory

Shin oak and other native brush add to the fuel load. Selective clearing keeps mature oak canopy and removes the understory that carries fire up into it.

METHOD: SELECTIVE CLEARING · UNDERSTORY REMOVAL
Ground Fuel
Dry Grass & Deadfall

Dry grass and deadfall catch first. A break that removes brush but leaves them still lets fire cross. We treat every fuel layer, not just the canopy.

METHOD: GROUND-LEVEL MULCHING · ROOT GRUBBING WHERE NEEDED
Regrowth
Cedar Seedlings & Resprouting Brush

Cedar comes back from seed. Mesquite and shin oak resprout from the roots. Annual maintenance removes regrowth before it closes the break.

METHOD: ANNUAL MAINTENANCE · SEEDLING REMOVAL

Common Questions

Fuel Break & Brush
Reduction — FAQ

How much does a fuel break cost?

Breaks are priced as forestry mulching on the acres cleared: $2,000–$5,200 per acre. Acres where roots are pulled are priced as tree mulching and root extraction, $5,000–$8,000 per acre, instead of the mulching rate. Priced per acre of corridor (length x width). Your site walk sets the final number.

How wide does a fuel break need to be?

It depends on slope and fuel, and steeper ground needs more width. If you are applying for the Texas A&M Forest Service Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant, each treatment must be at least 66 ft wide to qualify. We size breaks with you on the site walk.

Do fuel breaks work on steep terrain?

They can. Fire moves faster uphill, so placement matters more on slopes. We look at slope and the likely approach paths on the site walk before we place a break.

Can you build a break without damaging the trees next to it?

Yes. We flag oaks and other desirable trees beside the corridor and work around them. We avoid pruning or wounding oaks from roughly February through June because of oak wilt.

How long before a fuel break needs maintenance?

Cedar regrowth in a cleared break is mostly seedlings, since Ashe juniper does not resprout once cut below the lowest green limb. Dry grass builds up fast on disturbed soil. A yearly visit keeps the break working.

Can the Texas grant pay for a fuel break?

Possibly. The Texas A&M Forest Service Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant reimburses eligible landowners for mechanical treatment. The 2026 window closed July 14, 2026. See the grant page for what happens next and the 2027 waitlist.

Does a fuel break satisfy my insurer?

We cannot promise how any insurer will treat it. You get dated before and after photos of the break to send to your agent.

Can a fuel break be combined with defensible space work?

Yes, and on most properties that is the right plan. Defensible space protects the structure. A fuel break slows fire before it gets there. We scope both from the same site walk.
